Vasa Mihich is a renowned Los Angeles-based artist known for his sleek, colorful and captivating acrylic sculptures. He is a Senior Professor of Design at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where he has taught color theory for many years.
For nearly 50 years he has been working in acrylics, whether on canvas or through sculpture.
His sculptures, with their different geometric planes suspended in acrylic, are dynamic and endlessly fascinating.
“LACMA Brick Red” features a vibrant red grid that is illuminated and suspended against a solid black background.
As with the best of Mihich's work, the geometric pattern and color distort as the viewer moves around the sculpture. In this case, causing the unified grid to slant, expand, and completely vanish depending on the vantage point.
Unique to this work is the absence of negative space that is otherwise present throughout his oeuvre. Although there are only two colors present, the density of the sculpture creates an illusion that is reminiscent of a cityscape, making this work an outstanding example of Mihich’s use of arrangement and shape.
This minimalist sculpture is a paradigm of Mihich’s ongoing investigations of light and color.
After dedicating years of his career to education, Mihich now commits himself fully to his studio in Los Angeles where he continues to push the potential of sculpture with the acrylic medium
